How are the figures calculated?

All the eco-calculator data were studied and a model was established by the environmental study-certified ECOEFF design office, where the EPP (Environmental Product Profile) of the download mode of consumption was identified.

The calculator uses the well known CML method, developed by the University of Leiden in 1992 and revised in 2000.
This method consists of 10 indicators, 5 of which have been selected:

Depletion of abiotic natural resources

Air acidification

Eutrophication or excessive algae formation

Global warming or greenhouse gas emissions

Photochemical oxidation or ozone formation

The assumptions taken into account were as follows: "Downloading a 10-megabyte file delivered by Nexway using a desktop computer connected to the Internet on a 1024 kbit ADSL connection"
Three main phases were specifically studied:

Data transmission format

Data transfer

Data reception format

Result: Downloading a 10Mb file emits 0.525 grams of CO2, which is the equivalent of 3.7 metres travelled in a car with an average-sized engine.
